Our Director

Ryan Taylor

directorpicture4 Ryan Taylor, Founder and Director of the Learning Enrichment After-School Program, has been an educator for over a decade. In 1995, the Hampton University graduate began a teaching career at Marcus Garvey School, a private school in Los Angeles. With a thirst to help more underserved students, after a year he advanced to the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Over the course of three years, he taught a range of inner city students from elementary to high school.

Taylor’s experience in inner city schools uncovered a constant: inner city schools lacked motivated and talented instructors, lacked funding for essential supplies like text and work books and suffered from inadequate services and activities for students after school. Frustrated by the district’s pace, in 2002 Taylor formed Ryan Taylor’s Tutorial Service to mentor and tutor students after school. Shortly thereafter, an opportunity for Taylor’s Tutorial Service surfaced at Audubon Middle School.

In the fall of 2003, the LA Bridges after school program at Audubon Middle School hired Ryan Taylor’s Tutorial Service to serve their students. Taylor designed the program to maximize 1-on-1 interaction between student and tutor. He hired college educated tutors to deliver tailored lessons based on students’ individual skill set. The objective was for students to improve understanding of core concepts in reading, language & math and to learn how to prepare for tests through a disciplined approach to homework and study habits. Taylor’s Tutorial Service moved a whopping 90% of the enrolled students from failing to passing.

In the summer of 2004, while planning to have his eldest child begin attending the newly opened charter school, Dr. Theodore T. Alexander Science Center School, it was discovered that the new school had no comprehensive after school program. After meeting with the principal for several weeks, Taylor designed and established the leap after school program at the Science Center School.

leap is the product of Taylor’s natural drive to make a difference by helping children become enlightened, productive citizens. Taylor recognizes that our schools have a way to go before providing a high quality and well rounded education for all. Until then, leap will use the time after school to inspire the next generation to lead with boldness, creativity and compassion.

When Mr. Taylor is not enjoying time with his children, Morris, Olyn, and Nora, he takes pleasure in swimming, reading and developing business systems.
